REST API Returns 500 Rather Than 400 On Field Too Wide

Because validation rules don't include database field width, validation succeeds but then the database save fails (returning the 500). This might affect the UI, too.

Ideally validation rules would dynamically determine the width of a field and then constrain the field to that length.
